Title
Crossroads: Youth and Community Association
Introduction
Crossroads are a well respected small charity working within areas of multiple deprivation in the South East of Glasgow, with a strong board of 6 voluntary trustees. Their aim is to provide services to young people aged 10 – 18 within the Gorbals. They work with disadvantaged young people who are some of the most marginalised and socially excluded in Scotland, supporting their transition through to adulthood, providing creative educational programmes.
Over the past year they have supported over 2000 young people in their personal, educational and social development, as well as their transition as active citizens through the construction of trusting relationships as well as deliverance of needs led programmes. These are run 5 days from 7 including weekends.
Destitution and poverty are unfortunately relatively common occurrences for young people in the Gorbals, with very little services available for them to direct their enthusiasm for life. Over 37% of individuals within the Gorbals are income deprived (Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics) and an average of over 30% of young girls and boys deemed as having low self esteem (S1 – 4 SECHCP).
Crossroads provide a safe fun environment for young people to explore their interests, placing trust and responsibility within their abilities. Opportunities are made available for young people to accept responsibility, assess and direct the future direction of their youth centre. Young people are educated with the information on many issues such as drugs, alcohol and healthy living, allowing young people to make informed decisions on issues they will face within society.
The young people participate within workshops and activities in relation to their needs and interests, exploring issues relevant in contemporary Scottish ‘Youth Culture’, targeting the inclusion of the group within society, with a focus on training, education and developing skills that can be carried into future employment or to continue / re-enter formal or informal education. Projects centre on anti poverty, education and social inclusion strategies, providing young people with the skills, understanding and confidence to challenge issues facing them within society, developing self esteem and self drive. For example our Workshops include drama, dance, recycling, cultural cooking and creative writing. Our graffiti art workshop develops young people’s skills of expressing themselves through their work, also giving them the understanding between graffiti and vandalism.
Our “Arts 4 Life” project aims to demystify the perception of expressive arts as an upper class interest or pass time. Young people are encouraged to explore and define their core values, dreams and understanding of their role as an active citizen. We believe in the power of the ‘expressive arts’ in educating young people on how they can promote an inclusive society for their own and others benefit.
The Task
Your are required to develop a web site and online presence for the Crossroads project. It should provide information and inspiration about the organisation and be a focal point for all of their activities. It will be a virtual space that can be used by both the staff and the young people associated with it. It is vital that the finished design makes those involved in Crossroads proud of their organisation.
